First-generation Chromecast from 2013 loses Google’s support: Report

Discontinuation of support for first-generation Chromecast from 2013 announced by Google, with no further software or security updates planned.

According to Google’s support page, “Support for Chromecast (1st gen) has ended, which means these devices no longer receive software or security updates, and Google does not provide technical support for them. Users may notice a degradation in performance.”

Priced at just $35, the first-generation Chromecast, resembling a key with “Chrome” and the browser’s logo imprinted on top, offered an affordable solution to enable video streaming apps on TVs during a time when smart TVs were not yet prevalent. It featured an HDMI port on the right and a micro USB port for power and an adapter on the left, as reported by 9to5Google.

According to the report, following the first-generation Chromecast, Google introduced a puck-shaped second-generation model after two years. In 2018, the third-generation Chromecast was released.
