AI Pioneer ‘The Godfather’ Departs from Google and Issues Warning of Impending Danger

Geoffrey Hinton is a pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence. Along with two of his graduate students at the University of Toronto, he developed technology in 2012 that formed the basis for AI systems, which many of the tech industry’s largest companies consider vital for their future.

On Monday, however, Hinton became part of a growing group of critics who believe that tech companies are rapidly moving towards dangerous territory by developing products based on generative AI, which powers popular chatbots such as ChatGPT. Hinton, who had been one of the most respected voices in the field and worked at Google for over a decade, revealed that he had quit his job at the company so that he could freely speak out about the potential risks of AI. He admitted that a part of him now regrets his life’s work.

During a recent interview conducted in the dining room of his home in Toronto, which is located just a short distance from where he and his students made their breakthrough, Hinton stated, “I console myself with the normal excuse: If I hadn’t done it, somebody else would have.”

Hinton’s transformation from an AI pioneer to a doomsayer signifies a crucial moment for the technology industry, which finds itself at one of its most significant turning points in decades. Many industry leaders believe that the new AI systems could be as pivotal as the introduction of the web browser in the early 1990s, leading to breakthroughs in areas such as drug research and education.
