Microsoft India has taken a significant step in promoting linguistic diversity by adding four more Indian languages to its Microsoft Translator platform. Bhojpuri, Bodo, Dogri, and Kashmiri are the latest additions, bringing the total number of supported Indian languages to 20, aligning closely with the aim of accommodating all 22 official Indian languages.
The Microsoft Translator Platform can be accessed through various platforms, including the Microsoft Translator app, Edge browser, Office 365, Bing Translator, and the Azure AI Translator API, which is used by popular companies like Jio Haptik and Koo. This expansion is set to benefit approximately 61 million people across various regions in India and neighboring countries.
One of the key strengths of Microsoft’s translation capabilities is its use of Deep Neural Networks, which enables the platform to handle complex Indian languages while maintaining sensitivity to linguistic nuances.
The newly added languages to Microsoft Translator include Bhojpuri, Bodo, Dogri, and Kashmiri, along with the existing list of supported languages:
- Assamese
- Bengali
- Gujarati
- Hindi
- Kannada
- Konkani
- Maithili
- Malayalam
- Marathi
- Nepali
- Odia
- Punjabi
- Sindhi
- Tamil
- Telugu
- Urdu
Microsoft India believes that this expansion holds great promise for the nation. It is expected to enhance education and literacy, improve communication and governance, and create economic opportunities. Additionally, by bridging linguistic divides, this initiative safeguards indigenous knowledge and cultural identity, ultimately empowering citizens through the use of technology.
