Nokia has made a significant stride in the realm of 6G technology by inaugurating its pioneering 6G Lab at the Global R&D center in Bangalore, India. This groundbreaking Nokia 6G Lab India initiative is poised to expedite the development of fundamental 6G technologies and innovative applications, addressing the evolving needs of both industry and society. The virtual inauguration of this exceptional lab was graced by the presence of the Hon’ble Minister of Railways, Communications, Electronics & IT, Government of India, Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Empowering India’s 6G Vision with groundbreaking Nokia 6G Lab

Nokia’s 6G lab aligns seamlessly with the Government of India’s ‘Bharat 6G Vision,’ championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which envisions India as a global leader in the standardization, development, and implementation of 6G technology. Serving as a collaborative platform for industry stakeholders, this lab will foster the testing of groundbreaking solutions, evaluating their potential for commercialization.

Unlocking ‘Network as a Sensor’ Technology

An integral facet of this innovative lab is its focus on ‘Network as a Sensor’ technology. This visionary approach enables the network to perceive objects, individuals, and movement without the need for on-board sensors. In the 6G era, ‘Network as a Sensor’ emerges as a pivotal enabling technology that harmoniously blends the digital and physical worlds. It seamlessly integrates sensing capabilities into the wireless network, operating concurrently with communication services. This breakthrough has the potential to empower individuals to visualize their surroundings, gather information from distant objects, and interact with remote entities. Additionally, the lab will serve as a testbed for researching algorithms, privacy, and sustainable system design.

Nokia’s Leading Role in 6G Advancements with Nokia 6G Lab

Nokia stands at the forefront of 6G innovation, actively participating in various global projects and regional initiatives alongside industry peers, customers, academia, and research institutions. These collaborations aim to shape a unified vision and direction for 6G technology, including participation in the pioneering European 6G Flagship initiatives, Hexa-X and Hexa-X-II. Nokia is also a founding member of the Next G Alliance, instrumental in driving the 6G ecosystem in North America. Moreover, the company plays a pivotal role in coordinating the German Lighthouse project 6G ANNA.

The Hon’ble Minister of Railways, Communications, Electronics & IT, Government of India, Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, lauded the inauguration of Nokia’s 6G research lab, emphasizing its role in advancing PM Narendra Modi’s vision of positioning India as a global innovation hub. He said, “The inauguration of the Nokia 6G research lab in Bengaluru today is another step towards PM Narendra Modi’s vision of making India an innovation hub. Interesting use cases coming out of this lab will be related to transportation safety, health care and education which will be another big contribution in the entire Digital India suite.”

Nishant Batra, Chief Strategy and Technology Officer at Nokia, expressed the company’s commitment to realizing the Indian government’s ‘Bharat 6G vision.
