According to Mark Gurman’s newsletter for Bloomberg, Apple is gearing up to release its first-ever M3 Apple Silicon Macs in October. This launch is part of Apple’s busy season, which will also feature the unveiling of iPhone 15 and 15 Pro lines in September, alongside new Apple Watches.
Expected Models and Improvements
After the September event for the new iPhones and Apple Watches, Apple reportedly plans to reveal the new M3 Macs in October. The anticipated models include the M3 iMac, M3 13-inch MacBook Air, and M3 MacBook Pro. These devices are expected to feature a similar core count to the M2 chip but with enhanced performance and efficiency due to the use of a new 3-nanometer silicon fabrication process.
Rationale Behind Early Launch
Although the introduction of M3 Macs might seem premature, considering the recent release of M2-based products like the M2 Ultra Mac Studio and 15-inch MacBook Air, supply chain issues are believed to have caused delays in the latter portion of the M2 lineup. While an M3 MacBook Air is expected in October, updates for MacBook Pro and Mac Studio are projected to arrive later.
Event Possibility and Priorities
Regarding the iPad, major upgrades are not expected until the arrival of M3 iPad Pros with OLED screens, which is likely to happen next year. However, an updated iPad Air model with improved specifications is currently in development and might be ready for release this fall. It’s worth noting that the existing iPad Air still uses an M1 chip.
While Gurman doesn’t confirm whether Apple will hold an October event or opt for a press release to unveil the new Macs, an event seems more fitting given the significance of a new Mac launch.
The M3 chip’s first beneficiaries are expected to be the next iMac, 13-inch MacBook Air, and 13-inch MacBook Pro, as high-end MacBook Pros and desktops are not anticipated until later.
Future Developments
In recent reports, Apple has been exploring the development of larger iMacs, potentially featuring a display size of approximately 32 inches. Additionally, new iPad Pro models with OLED displays are scheduled for 2024, and Gurman predicts a 30-inch iMac will debut around the same time.
