The news surfaced through a screenshot shared by AssembleDebug on X (formerly Twitter), showcasing a forthcoming addition to the UPI settings section labeled ‘International payments.
Once activated, users will have the option to enable international UPI payments and set a transaction period of up to three months for conducting transactions with businesses in specific countries.
While competitors like PhonePe and Google Pay already offer similar features, WhatsApp’s integration of international transactions within its app is expected to streamline the process for users.
Ever since launching in-app UPI payments for Indian users in November 2020, WhatsApp has been continuously enhancing its functionality. With support from over 140 banks, the platform has steadily evolved to provide a seamless payment experience.
Recent updates have included features like the ability to pin up to three messages in chats and search messages by date, all aimed at improving the overall user experience.

The international payment feature is currently in development and may initially be available to limited beta users. However, it is not yet accessible to all users. More information regarding its release is expected closer to the launch date.
WhatsApp’s move to introduce international UPI payments underscores its commitment to providing convenient and secure payment solutions for its users, further solidifying its position as a leading messaging and payments platform in India’s digital landscape.
