Report: Apple Plans AI-Focused M4 Chips for Macs

Apple is gearing up for a significant overhaul of its Mac lineup with the impending introduction of the M4 family of chips, according to a report by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. These chips are specifically designed to prioritize artificial intelligence capabilities, marking a significant leap forward in Mac performance and functionality.

Introduction of First M4 Macs

Sources suggest that Apple is on the verge of producing the initial batch of M4 chips, which will come in at least three main variants. The tech giant plans to integrate these chips into all upcoming Mac models, signaling a comprehensive transition across its product range.

The transition to M4 chips is expected to commence later this year, with updates planned for various Mac models, including:

  • A new iMac
  • A lower-end 14-inch MacBook Pro
  • Higher-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models

A refreshed Mac mini

These updated computers are slated to hit the market starting late this year and continuing into early next year, although plans are subject to change, as cautioned by Gurman.

Future Releases

Following the initial release, Apple intends to launch more M4 Macs throughout 2025. This includes updates to the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air in the spring, the Mac Studio around the middle of the year, and the Mac Pro later in 2025.

M4 Chip Variants

The M4 family of chips will comprise an entry-level variant (code-named Donan) and at least two higher-performance versions. These chips will prioritize AI processing capabilities and seamless integration with the next macOS.

  • Entry-level chip (Donan): Powers entry-level MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac mini.
  • Higher-end chip (Brava): Featured in Mac Studio, higher-spec MacBook Pro models, and a higher-end Mac mini.

Mac Pro Enhancements

For the highest-end desktop Mac, the Mac Pro, Apple plans to introduce the new Hidra chip next year. There are discussions about enhancing the Mac Pro’s specifications, potentially supporting up to half a terabyte of RAM, a significant increase from the current maximum of 192GB.
