Nokia Mobile Broadband Index report reveals 5G data consumption four times faster than 4G in India

Nokia unveiled the results of its annual Mobile Broadband Index (MBiT) report, shedding light on the Indian market’s mobile data landscape. Since its launch in October 2022, 5G users have been consuming approximately 3.6 times more mobile data traffic compared to 4G users. In 2023 alone, users devoured a staggering 17.4 exabytes of data per month, marking a 26 percent Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) over the past five years. Notably, 5G accounted for 15 percent of all data traffic in 2023, signifying its role as a significant driver of data consumption.

The report underscores a significant shift in India’s mobile data arena fueled by the increasing adoption of 5G technology. 5G traffic has experienced remarkable growth across all telecom circles, with metro circles leading the charge and capturing a 20 percent share of the total mobile data traffic. The proliferation of 5G availability and performance, alongside the affordability of a wide range of devices, and the introduction of new data-intensive applications and services, is poised to accelerate the growth of 5G in the future. Additionally, the average monthly data traffic per user surged by 24 percent year-on-year in 2023, reaching an impressive 24.1 gigabytes per user per month.

The ascent of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) is expected to unlock new opportunities for both home and business users, with FWA users projected to consume approximately 2.5 times more data than average 5G users. Moreover, the 5G device ecosystem in India is rapidly evolving, with about 17 percent of active 4G devices—totaling 134 million out of 796 million devices—now equipped with 5G capabilities.

Furthermore, the Nokia MBiT 2024 report forecasts significant technological shifts leading up to 2030, paving the way for new opportunities in a digitized and programmable world. Key technology trends shaping the landscape include the Metaverse, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML), Cloud computing, and Web 3.0, among others.
