Meta Unveils Project 92, a New Twitter Competitor

Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has been actively developing its own alternative to Twitter. With the launch approaching, leaked slides from an internal meeting have provided insights into the design and features of the upcoming app, according to The Verge.

The upcoming app, internally referred to as “Project 92” and potentially named “Threads,” leverages Instagram’s account system to streamline user information. Meta’s chief product officer, Chris Cox, has described the app as their response to Twitter. Notably, the app will integrate with ActivityPub, a decentralized social media protocol.

This integration allows users to easily migrate their accounts and followers to other platforms that support ActivityPub, such as Mastodon. Meta has reportedly received interest from creators and public figures who are seeking a platform that is responsibly operated.

During the meeting, Cox disclosed that development for the app began in January, emphasizing Meta’s dedication to launching it as soon as possible. Interestingly, influential figures like DJ Slime have already pledged their commitment to using the app. Furthermore, Meta is reportedly in discussions with renowned personalities such as Oprah and the Dalai Lama, indicating potential partnerships with notable figures.
