BorgWarner has announced new Variable Cam Timing (VCT) program awards in Europe and China, further expanding its presence in engine technology. The latest wins include a program life extension and higher production volumes for a European premium automaker’s V6 engine family, along with a new business win with a major Chinese automaker for its 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine family.
CTA VCT Technology Targets Faster Engine Response
BorgWarner’s center-bolt Cam Torque Actuated (CTA) VCT system is designed to simplify internal oil passages compared with conventional oil-pressure-actuated VCT architectures.
According to the company, the technology enables faster cam phasing response, stronger lock-pin engagement, and reduced oil consumption, supporting improved fuel efficiency. These characteristics make the system suitable for both hybrid and conventional internal combustion engines.
VCT Program Extended for European Premium OEM
For the European premium automaker, BorgWarner supplies its center-bolt CTA VCT system for a V6 engine family used in premium and sports cars.
The program covers two power output classes ranging from 260 kW to 375 kW and is offered across both hybrid and pure gasoline configurations. The program is already in series production, while the newly awarded increase in volumes and extension of the program lifecycle are scheduled to begin in January 2027.
New 1.5-Litre Turbocharged Engine Program in China
In China, BorgWarner has secured a new program with a major Chinese OEM for its high-volume 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine family.
The engines are used across a range of SUV and sedan models for the Chinese market. The conquest award replaces the previous supplier, with BorgWarner highlighting fuel efficiency, local manufacturing capabilities, and cost competitiveness as key advantages of its CTA VCT solution.
Production for the Chinese program is scheduled to begin in September 2026.
Expanding VCT Applications Across Powertrain Technologies
The new awards strengthen BorgWarner’s position in variable cam timing technology across both established combustion engines and hybrid powertrains.
By combining fast cam phasing response with reduced oil consumption and simplified oil routing, the company’s CTA VCT technology is designed to support the efficiency and performance requirements of modern vehicle powertrains.
