BorgWarner Expands Electrified Propulsion Partnership with Great Wall Motor Through Dual Inverter Projects

BorgWarner Inc., a global leader in sustainable mobility solutions, has announced an expansion of its partnership with Great Wall Motor in the field of electrified propulsion technologies. Following the success of two previously announced dual inverter programs, BorgWarner has now secured two additional projects with the Chinese automaker, with mass production set to begin in 2026.

Advanced Dual Inverter Technology for Greater Efficiency and Flexibility

At the heart of this collaboration lies BorgWarner’s dual inverter technology, designed to control and drive two electric motors simultaneously through a single, compact controller. This highly integrated system enhances packaging flexibility, reduces installation complexity, and contributes to lower overall vehicle weight and cost. Using BorgWarner’s proprietary packaging technology, the inverter can accommodate various power module configurations within the same compact design—an essential advantage for next-generation hybrid and electric vehicles.

Innovative Cooling and Power Management Systems

A defining feature of BorgWarner’s latest dual inverter is its double-sided cooling power module equipped with the newest generation of Viper power switches. This design innovation reduces thermal resistance by up to 50% compared to single-sided cooling, significantly improving power density and thermal performance. The inverter’s ability to package different types of semiconductor dies within modules of identical dimensions ensures compliance with China’s CLTC (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle) standards, while its adaptive battery voltage regulation extends both the constant power and high-efficiency operating ranges of the motor—boosting overall system efficiency.

Flexible Platform-Based Architecture for HEV and PHEV Applications

BorgWarner’s platform-based dual inverter architecture enables seamless adaptability across multiple hybrid applications. Among the two new projects, one is designed for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and integrates a DC/DC converter with an optional voltage boost module, while the other, developed for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), eliminates both components for a streamlined design. This modular flexibility allows OEMs to accelerate product development, enhance scalability, and reduce design and engineering costs.

Driving the Future of Electrified Mobility

By deepening its collaboration with Great Wall Motor, BorgWarner continues to strengthen its position as a key enabler of vehicle electrification in China and globally. These dual inverter projects reaffirm the company’s commitment to advancing intelligent, high-efficiency propulsion systems that support cleaner, more sustainable mobility solutions for the future.

“BorgWarner’s technical expertise in electrification and dual inverter products has earned Great Wall Motor’s continued confidence,” said Dr Stefan Demmerle, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager, PowerDrive Systems. “The extension of this collaboration not only reflects recognition of our products and technologies, but also underscores our strong commitment to supporting our customers’ new energy strategies. We will remain dedicated to accelerating their electrified vehicle portfolio.”
