Nokia’s latest Mobile Broadband Index (MBiT) report highlights an extraordinary threefold increase in 5G data traffic across India in 2024. The surge is attributed to widespread network expansion, improved connectivity, and a rapidly growing ecosystem of 5G-compatible devices.
Category B and C Circles Lead 5G Adoption
The report reveals that Category B and C circles experienced the fastest 5G growth, with data consumption rising by 3.4 times and 3.2 times, respectively. This reflects the rapid 5G penetration beyond metro cities, driven by improved network coverage and affordability. In metro circles, 5G now accounts for 43% of total mobile broadband traffic, up from 20% in 2023, signaling a shift away from 4G.
Rising Data Consumption and 5G FWA Growth
The average monthly data consumption per user has jumped to 27.5GB in 2024, reflecting a 19.5% CAGR over the past five years. The adoption of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) has played a crucial role in this trend, with FWA users consuming over 12 times more data than mobile data users. The expansion of 5G-based broadband services in homes and businesses has significantly contributed to this increase.
5G Device Ecosystem Expands Rapidly
The number of active 5G devices in India has doubled in the past year, reaching 271 million in 2024. This trend is expected to accelerate further in 2025, with nearly 90% of smartphones set for replacement being 5G-enabled. The surge in 5G adoption highlights the growing preference for faster connectivity and future-ready technology among Indian consumers.
5G to Surpass 4G by 2026, Paving the Way for 6G
Based on current trends, the Nokia MBiT Index projects 5G data traffic will overtake 4G traffic by early 2026. The evolution toward 5G Advanced is expected to unlock new revenue streams, enable intelligent network operations, and enhance business potential. This transition will lay the foundation for 6G technology, with capabilities such as AI-driven intelligence, distributed computing, and advanced spatial sensing shaping the next phase of mobile connectivity.
Nokia’s Role in India’s 5G Revolution
Tarun Chhabra, Senior Vice President and Country Head of Nokia India, emphasized Nokia’s commitment to driving India’s 5G growth. He stated, “Nokia remains at the heart of India’s mobile broadband revolution, driving the incredible proliferation of 5G with cutting-edge technology and deep partnerships. We look forward to continuing this journey with our long-standing operator partners to meet the ever-growing demand for connectivity.”
With 5G adoption accelerating and 6G developments on the horizon, India is poised for a new era of high-speed, intelligent, and immersive connectivity.
