Esri India Launches Dana Cyclone Monitoring Application to Assist in Cyclone Mitigation Efforts

As Cyclone Dana intensifies over the Bay of Bengal, Esri India has launched a new tool to help track and manage the impending storm’s impact. Expected to develop into a depression by October 24, 2024, Cyclone Dana is projected to bring heavy rainfall across Odisha, southern West Bengal, and surrounding coastal areas, with possible landfall between October 24 and 26. Authorities expect the most intense rainfall on October 24, prompting a swift response for disaster preparedness in affected regions.

Esri India’s Dana Cyclone Monitoring Application: Real-Time Data for Effective Disaster Response

To aid both the public and government agencies in their response to Cyclone Dana, Esri India has introduced the Dana Cyclone Monitoring Application. The application aggregates data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Windy’s real-time weather data, and Indo ArcGIS Living Atlas, providing a comprehensive view of the cyclone’s path and status through Esri’s dynamic dashboards. This innovative application gives officials involved in disaster management the ability to monitor real-time data, visualize and communicate updates, and analyze cyclone progress on a single screen.

Enhanced Decision-Making Capabilities for Disaster Preparedness

According to Agendra Kumar, Managing Director of Esri India, the Dana Cyclone Monitoring Application is designed to empower disaster management authorities with actionable data. “Disaster preparedness helps protect lives, property, and livelihoods while ensuring faster recovery and minimizing long-term impacts,” Kumar stated. “Live data during events like Cyclone Dana enables authorities to make critical decisions, such as when to issue evacuation orders and where to mobilize resources. We are keen to support these objectives with the Dana Cyclone Monitoring Application.”

The public can also access the application to better prepare themselves for the cyclone. Esri India’s goal is to make disaster response more efficient, using advanced data integration to ultimately save lives and resources.

Application Integration with India’s Broader Disaster Management Efforts

Esri India’s new tool is a significant addition to India’s existing disaster response infrastructure, complementing other real-time applications that support weather-related disaster response. As Cyclone Dana approaches, the Dana Cyclone Monitoring Application provides a timely resource, ensuring that citizens and officials have access to accurate, up-to-the-minute data for a safer, more coordinated response to this severe weather event.
