Let’s Talk Consent – TINDER and YUVAA partners to introduce an Online Self-Learning Course on Consent for young adults in India

Tinder, the renowned app for meeting new people globally, has taken a groundbreaking step by launching an online self-learning course called “Let’s Talk Consent” in collaboration with Yuvaa. This initiative aims to provide valuable insights into interpersonal consent, addressing the complexities of consent in relationships among young Indian adults. The course builds upon Tinder’s existing “Let’s Talk Consent” initiative, which was introduced in 2021, and has since been instrumental in fostering discussions and awareness about consent.

Over the past three years, Tinder has made significant strides in promoting consent education through various avenues. These efforts include establishing a resource center, creating short films like “Closure” and “We Need To Talk,” and conducting in-person consent and safe dating workshops across three cities in India.

Empowering Young Adults Through Education

Developed by Yuvaa, a prominent youth media organization in India, the Let’s Talk Consent course is available on Coursera, a renowned online learning platform. This educational initiative represents a significant advancement in providing reliable and authentic guidance on interpersonal consent to young adults in India. It aligns with the findings of a 2022 survey, which highlighted the growing demand for comprehensive consent education among young adults in the country.

According to the survey

  • 65% of young adults took steps to understand the concept of consent personally
  • 6 in 10 young adults expressed a need for more resources and safe spaces for discussions on consent
  • 67% of young adults advocated for the integration of comprehensive consent education in schools and colleges

Kevin Lee, CEO of Yuvaa, emphasized the importance of addressing boundaries and consent, particularly among young adults navigating dating and intimacy. He said, “At Yuvaa, we meet tens of thousands of young people across India every year and dating and intimacy are among the topics they find hardest to speak about and navigate. Boundaries and consent are so personal but also so important – and with our collaborative effort on the Safe Dating Curriculum launched last year with Tinder, we’ve tried to take the conversation around consent directly to Gen Z in a way that they understand and resonate with. Now, this new online course provides practical strategies for both online and real-life interactions, emphasizing safety, open communication, and mutual respect for personal boundaries”

Aahana Dhar, Director of Communications at Tinder India said, “Tinder has been the first stepping stone in the online dating journey for countless young adults which makes it very important for us to support those dating to form healthy relationships from the outset. Consent has always been at Tinder’s core, starting with mutual matching, which requires both users to express interest before chatting, as well as our suite of trust and safety features. We reinforce these efforts through local educational initiatives such as ‘Let’s Talk Consent’. Collaborations with organizations like Yuvaa allow us to provide reliable information and guidance, empowering Tinder users to navigate dating with confidence and respect.”
