Long road ahead for Krutrim, India’s own AI Chatbot

Remember when Sam Altman of OpenAi (ChatGPT) mocked Indian tech capabilities in 2023? Well, OLA, India’s ridesharing tech giant launched the beta version of Krutrim, an Indian version of the chatbot to challenge rival OpenAI and Google’s Gemini. The beta version is now available for public use and can be accessed at chat.olakrutim.com.

Interestingly, the indigenous AI startup became a unicorn by raising 50 million dollars at a valuation of 1 billion dollars within months of its launch. Krutrim was launched on 15th December 2023 and became the country’s first unicorn of the year in 2024!

Bhavish Agarwal, Founder of OLA shared the news on his X (formerly Twitter) handle. He said, “This is a start for us and our first-generation product. Lots more to come and this will also improve significantly as we build on this base. Do give us your feedback. While some hallucinations will be there but much lower for Indian contexts than other global platforms, and we will be working overtime to find and fix! We’ve rooted Krutrim strongly into Indian values and data with over 10+ Indian languages and ready to assist in English, Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, Gujarati, and even Hinglish! Krutrim marks the dawn of a new era in the AI computing stack for our nation. We will aim to innovate alongside the world and define future paradigms.”

We tested the AI Chatbot and asked some common questions about the AI assistant. Check the results:

The chat assistant seems a bit slower than its competitors for now but it’s doing an exemplary job in following the prompts. Initially, we had difficulties logging in using our mobile number and also, and the results were factually incorrect. But the technical glitch was sorted out within 24 hours. However, the chatbot does not provide references for a better understanding of the topic.
