Google Next-Gen Titan Security Key with Passkey Support: Unveils

Google has introduced the latest iteration of its Google Next-Gen Titan Security Key at the Aspen Cyber Summit in New York City, signaling a significant step in bolstering online security measures. Originally launched in 2018, the Titan Security Key has been a crucial tool in the fight against phishing attacks, aiming to prevent unauthorized access to Google Accounts. However, Google is now looking beyond passwords and has introduced passkeys as a simpler and more secure method for accessing accounts.

Titan Security Key Evolution:

The Google Next-Gen Titan Security Keys are specifically designed to support passkeys, recognizing that not all users rely on smartphones or devices that are compatible with this advanced security feature. Google’s vision is to eliminate passwords altogether, and passkeys are seen as a key step in achieving this goal. The keys incorporate secure cryptography on a portable hardware device to enhance security measures further.

The two new models are set to replace the existing USB-A and USB-C devices, now equipped with NFC capabilities for swift connections with mobile devices. Offering the ability to store over 250 unique passkeys, these keys stand out as best-in-class among FIDO2 security keys. During the setup process, users can establish a simple PIN code to securely sign in without the need for a traditional password in the future.

Collaborative Protection Initiative:

Aligning with its commitment to the Advanced Protection Program (APP), Google plans to distribute 100,000 of the new security keys at no cost to individuals deemed high-risk globally in 2024. This initiative, supported by expert partners such as Access Now, Defending Digital Campaigns, Freedom House, the International Foundation of Electoral Systems, Internews, and PUBLIC, aims to enhance online security for individuals with high visibility and sensitive information.

Pricing and Availability – Titan Security Key

The latest Google Titan Security Key is now available for purchase on the Google Store. The USB-A/NFC Security Key is priced at USD 30 (approximately Rs. 2,495), while the USB-C/NFC Security Key is priced at USD 35 (approximately Rs. 2,910).
