In a recent alert issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the regulatory body has cautioned the public about a surge in fraudulent calls from entities claiming to be associated with TRAI. The callers deceitfully inform individuals that their mobile numbers will be disconnected due to alleged involvement in sending unsolicited messages.
According to the information received by TRAI, some companies, agencies, and individuals are falsely asserting their affiliation with TRAI, stating that mobile numbers are at risk of disconnection. The callers further allege that the targeted numbers have been utilized for illegal activities and that Aadhaar numbers have been misused for obtaining SIM cards.
TRAI emphasizes that it does not engage in the blocking or disconnection of any mobile numbers belonging to individual telecom customers.
Furthermore, the regulatory body explicitly states that it never sends messages or makes calls for the purpose of disconnecting mobile numbers. TRAI has not authorized any agency to contact customers for such activities, and all such calls are deemed illegal and subject to legal action.
In light of these deceptive practices, TRAI urges the public to exercise caution and treat any call or message claiming to be from TRAI as potentially fraudulent. The regulatory body is not involved in any activities that would require individuals to engage in Skype video calls to avoid mobile number disconnection.
According to the Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulation (TCCCPR) 2018 of TRAI, Access Service Providers are responsible for taking appropriate actions against mobile numbers involved in sending unsolicited communications. TRAI advises affected individuals to address the matter directly with their respective service providers by contacting the Customer Service Center numbers. Alternatively, individuals can report such incidents on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (https://cybercrime.gov.in) or call the Cyber Crime Helpline Number 1930.
The public is encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious communication claiming to be from TRAI to the appropriate authorities. TRAI emphasizes that swift action is necessary to curb these fraudulent activities and ensure the security and trust of telecom consumers across India.
