According to Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for IT, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology plans to send a notice to WhatsApp regarding the problem of spam calls originating from unknown international numbers. The Minister emphasized that digital platforms are responsible for ensuring users’ safety, and the government will take action against any potential privacy breaches.
Minister of State for IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said, “The Ministry is taking note of it, they will send them a notice. I have said repeatedly that openness, trust, safety, and accountability are the responsibility of platforms who deliver to digital nagriks.”
Recently, there has been a notable surge in Indian users of WhatsApp receiving unwanted calls from overseas numbers. With more than 500 million users in India, the messaging giant, owned by Meta, has released a statement claiming its commitment to aligning with the government in ensuring user safety.
WhatsApp said, “Protecting the privacy and security of users is fundamental to Meta and to WhatsApp. Our users are at the heart of everything we do and we are fully aligned with the Government’s goal of keeping users safe. WhatsApp is a leader among end-to-end encrypted services in protecting user safety.”
