Union ministers have tested the ‘BharOS’ operating system, which was developed by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-Madras)

On Tuesday, Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Ashwini Vaishnaw successfully tested “BharOS”, an indigenous operating system developed by Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras). Pradhan stated that this step towards data privacy will mainly benefit the poor people of the country by providing a strong, reliable and self-sufficient digital infrastructure.

The BharOS operating system was developed by JandK Operations Private Limited (JandKops), which was incubated at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras).

BharOS is designed to be installed on commercial off-the-shelf handsets. It is aimed at organizations that have strict privacy and security requirements and handle sensitive information that requires confidential communications on restricted apps on mobile devices. The system enables users to access private cloud services through private 5G networks.

BharOS is designed to give users more control over their device by not including any default apps. This approach allows users to choose only the apps they are familiar with and trust, and also gives them control over the permissions that apps have on their device. They can choose to only allow apps that they trust to access certain features or data on their device.
