The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has reported a sweeping nationwide crackdown on spam and digital fraud, made possible through the growing adoption of the TRAI DND (TRAIDND) App. Over the past year, the regulator has disconnected more than 21 lakh fraudulent mobile numbers and blacklisted around one lakh entities linked to spam calls and deceptive SMS campaigns. According to TRAI, this unprecedented enforcement action reflects the power of public participation, as citizens increasingly use the TRAIDND App to report unsolicited and suspicious communication.
TRAI Urges Citizens to Use the TRAIDND App
TRAI has urged all mobile users to actively report spam calls and messages through the app rather than relying solely on blocking numbers on their smartphones. Blocking stops harassment only at the individual level, while a formal report through TRAIDND enables authorities to investigate, trace, and permanently disconnect offenders. This distinction, TRAI says, is critical for controlling telecom misuse at scale.
What Calls and SMS Should Be Reported
The regulator has clarified what kinds of calls and SMS should be reported through the app. Users are encouraged to flag promotional messages sent without consent, calls offering loans, job scams, phishing links, OTP fraud attempts, threats, and any communication that seeks sensitive personal or banking details. Every report submitted through the app contributes to building a safer digital ecosystem, enabling the regulator to identify repeat offenders, shut down illegal communication channels, and prevent criminals from targeting more victims.
How the App Helps Control Digital Fraud
According to TRAI, the TRAIDND App has become an essential tool in the fight against digital fraud. Each report helps authorities identify patterns of misuse, monitor suspicious behaviour, and launch targeted enforcement. This collective vigilance is gradually reducing the spread of deceptive communication that often leads to financial loss, identity theft, or large-scale cybercrime.
Key Safety Steps Citizens Should Follow
To protect themselves, citizens are advised to follow crucial safety steps. Users should avoid sharing personal, banking, or OTP information over calls, SMS, or social media; disconnect immediately if a caller sounds threatening, demanding, or suspicious; and report any attempted fraud to the National Cybercrime Helpline (1930) or the cybercrime reporting portal. TRAI has also recommended using the “Chakshu” feature on the Sanchar Saathi platform to report telecom resource misuse, including impersonation attempts and fraudulent activities.
Ensuring a Safer Telecom Environment
TRAI emphasises that ongoing technology-driven monitoring, strict enforcement, and active public participation through the TRAIDND App are vital to stopping spam at its source. The authority continues to encourage all citizens—especially senior citizens, women, and individuals who may be less digitally experienced—to stay alert, spread awareness, and promptly report any suspicious communication they receive.
