Samsung, the South Korean electronics giant, is set to revolutionize smartphone photography by incorporating dedicated AI chips directly into its camera sensors. This ambitious move, termed “Humanoid Sensors” internally, seeks to imbue camera image sensors with the ability to sense and replicate human senses. The company aims to implement this groundbreaking technology in its devices as early as 2027.
AI Integration for Superior Imaging
Samsung’s endeavor involves merging artificial intelligence directly into its camera image sensors, a significant departure from traditional sensors that rely on a device’s CPU for image processing. The dedicated AI chip at the sensor level is anticipated to enhance image quality, reduce latency, and lower power consumption. Moreover, the integration of AI is poised to elevate face and object recognition capabilities, offering users a more advanced and seamless photography experience.
Past Innovations and Future Plans
In the past year, Samsung showcased its commitment to cutting-edge imaging technology with the unveiling of a 200-megapixel ISOCELL camera sensor featuring “ZOOM Anyplace” technology. This innovative approach utilizes AI for automatic object tracking during close-up shots, providing users with improved flexibility and precision in photography.
SK Hynix, a South Korean chipmaker, also joined the race by revealing its camera sensor integrated with an AI processing chip during its Tech Summit in 2023. The trend of integrating AI directly into camera sensors signals a paradigm shift in how imaging technology is evolving to meet the growing demands of users for enhanced features and capabilities.
AI-Tools Coming to Galaxy Series
While the incorporation of AI into camera sensors aligns with Samsung’s long-term vision, the company is set to introduce AI-tools on its Galaxy series smartphones sooner. Taking cues from innovations like the Google Pixel 8 series, Samsung plans to introduce features such as generating wallpapers using keywords, AI-powered object relocation in images, and expanding pictures beyond their actual borders. Additionally, the Samsung Notes app is expected to receive AI treatment, offering users the ability to auto-format large paragraphs and generate summaries with a simple prompt.
