Government-backed Innovation: Partnership between boAt, and Centre of Excellence proves new IP creation potential in the audio wear category in India

In a remarkable leap for Indian innovation, boAt Labs, the research and development arm of boAt, India’s premier audio and wearable brand, proudly introduced their newly developed indigenous Neckband IP (Intellectual Property). This landmark achievement not only signifies a major stride for boAt Labs but also embodies the enormous potential for innovation and value engineering within the Indian electronics industry.

Crafted under the umbrella of the “Make in India” initiative, the indigenous Neckband IP is the outcome of a fruitful partnership between boAt Labs and the Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Electronics System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) of Mobile Enhancements, and is poised to reshape the future of Indian electronics.

The CoE, an avant-garde establishment hosted by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) in Noida, is a visionary project founded by the Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY) in conjunction with the Government of Uttar Pradesh (UP) and the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA). Its primary objective is to empower Indian enterprises in establishing a thriving design ecosystem. Operating with pivotal support from CDAC, the CoE offers state-of-the-art infrastructure and a reservoir of expertise, catalyzing the evolution of innovative electronic products on Indian soil. It’s within this dynamic environment that boAt Labs harnessed the resources to conceptualize and actualize the indigenous Neckband IP.

The momentous partnership between boAt and ICEA came to fruition in 2022.

boAt, renowned in the consumer lifestyle electronics industry, is the first entity to collaborate with ICEA in this capacity, unveiling a sophisticated Neckband IP that not only embodies a wealth of features but also bears an attractive value proposition for both Indian brands and consumers.

The genesis of this pioneering Neckband IP unfolded as a result of innovative design paradigms. The dedicated R&D engineers at boAt Labs, in concert with global technology collaborators, component suppliers, and distribution partners, fine-tuned the Bill of Material (BOM), cherry-picked system-on-chip (SoC) solutions, and sourced top-tier components. The IP further integrates precision-tuned algorithms to heighten the user experience, delivering enhancements in audio and call quality.

boAt’s venture into indigenous IP creation is a monumental stride toward escalating domestic value addition and establishing a globally competitive electronics industry in India. It reaffirms the potential of Indian enterprises to innovate and craft high-quality products at competitive prices. Importantly, it paves the way for a more self-reliant India, reducing the nation’s reliance on foreign corporations for electronics products.

Perhaps most notably, the IP ecosystem forged by boAt Labs will be a democratic force in the market, providing any Indian consumer electronics company with the opportunity to produce their Neckband products locally, without the need to seek designs from foreign Independent Design Houses (IDHs). This significant leap effectively democratizes the Neckband IP landscape for the benefit of the Indian market.

In this development, boAt Labs and its partners have laid a sturdy foundation for the future of Indian electronics and the boundless potential that can be unlocked within the nation. As the industry continues to evolve, we can anticipate further pioneering innovations from India’s very own tech ecosystem.

“The development of the neckband IP is a testament to the creativity, design and innovation of the Indian electronics industry,” said Mr Pankaj Mohindroo – Chairman at ICEA. “We are excited to collaborate with boAt Labs to develop more such IPs in the future. We believe that these IPs will help to accelerate the growth of the electronics industry in India and make India a global hub for electronics design and manufacturing.”

“boAt is committed to nation-building. With the aid of India’s public-private partnerships, industry expertise, and infrastructure, this latest accomplishment showcases the country’s ability to produce innovative new IPs. This IP is a small, yet a significant step in nurturing future national champions”, said Mr. Sameer Mehta, Co-Founder and CEO at Imagine Marketing Limited (parent company of boAt). “We will continue to partner with apex industry bodies like ICEA to provide technical and product mentoring as well as expert advice on audio and wearables.” He added.

“We are proud to announce the development of our indigenous neckband IP in cooperation with ICEA. This is a significant milestone for us and for the Indian electronics industry” said Naveen M Hiremath, Head boAt Labs (R&D division of boAt). “We believe that this IP will help Indian brands to deliver even better products at even more competitive prices. We are committed to supporting the Make in India initiative and building a strong and vibrant electronics industry in India. We worked closely with the CEO of the Centre of Excellence (Noida), Mr Ramashish Ray, an electronics industry veteran, and his team, and their active contribution really helped us achieve this goal”.
