Paras Defence to Establish India’s First Optics Park with ₹12,000 Crore Investment in Maharashtra

Paras Defence & Space Technologies Limited, a leader in optics and optronic systems for defence and space, has announced a groundbreaking investment of ₹12,000 crores to establish India’s first Optics Park in Maharashtra. This significant initiative was unveiled at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, marking a transformative step in India’s journey towards technological self-reliance in advanced optical systems.

Partnership with the Government of Maharashtra

To bring this ambitious vision to life, Paras Defence has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Maharashtra (GoM). The state government has committed comprehensive support, including land allocation, incentives, and necessary approvals, to ensure the project’s success. This collaboration underscores Maharashtra’s commitment to fostering innovation and positioning itself as a hub for advanced industries.

Visionary Leadership

Munjal Sharad Shah, Managing Director of Paras Defence & Space Technologies Ltd, emphasized the transformative impact of the project, stating: “The Optics Park reflects our unwavering commitment to advancing India’s technological capabilities. This revolutionary project will not only boost the domestic manufacturing ecosystem but also solidify India’s position as a global innovation hub. Our Optics Park will bridge technological gaps and create opportunities for knowledge exchange, innovation, and growth across sectors. This initiative represents a monumental milestone for both Paras Defence and India’s technological aspirations.”

A spokesperson from the Government of Maharashtra added: “We are proud to collaborate with Paras Defence to drive innovation and foster technological leadership in Maharashtra for Optical Technologies for Defence, Space, Automotive, Semiconductor and other applications. This project exemplifies our commitment to establishing the state as a hub for advanced industries and investments.”

Technological Advancements and Applications

The Optics Park aims to establish India as a world leader in optical technologies. It will feature cutting-edge infrastructure for raw material development, optical assembly, advanced system testing, and an Academy for Optics & Allied Technologies. The initiative will focus on developing technologies such as silicon and germanium growing, MEMS-based sensors, adaptive optics, and advanced laser systems.

The park will cater to diverse applications, including quantum communication, anti-drone systems, high-speed imaging, and optical materials like germanium, silicon, zinc selenide, and glass ceramic materials. These advancements will impact industries ranging from aviation, defence, and semiconductors to agriculture, medical, and security sectors.

Economic and Employment Impact

The project is expected to generate over 2,000 direct employment opportunities, significantly contributing to local economic growth. It aligns with the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, reducing dependency on foreign technologies and fostering a robust domestic manufacturing ecosystem.

Phased Development Plan

The Optics Park will be developed as a greenfield project, commencing operations in 2028 and scaling up in phases until 2035. This phased approach ensures scalability and flexibility to accommodate technological advancements and market demands.

Driving Innovation and Self-Reliance

Paras Defence plans to leverage its robust network of mentor institutions, international partnerships, and access to capital markets and foreign direct investment (FDI) to realize this ambitious vision. The park will serve as a cornerstone of India’s efforts to become a self-reliant hub for optics and optical systems, reshaping the global optics landscape.

Future Impact

The Optics Park promises to place India on the global map of advanced technologies, driving innovation across defence, space, automotive, and commercial applications. By fostering technological advancements and industry collaborations, the project will significantly contribute to India’s aspirations for economic growth and technological leadership.

Launch Timeline

The Optics Park project is set to commence development in 2028, with a comprehensive rollout plan extending to 2035, ensuring a strategic and impactful transformation of India’s optics and optronic capabilities.
