Nokia has been chosen by Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) as a key partner to deploy both 4G and 5G networks across major Indian cities. The three-year deal announced today will focus on modernizing VIL’s existing 4G infrastructure, while simultaneously rolling out the next-generation 5G network. This strategic partnership aims to enhance connectivity for over 200 million Vodafone Idea customers in India.
Nokia, already a leading supplier for Vodafone Idea’s 4G network, will expand its market share by replacing the incumbent vendor in key circles such as Chennai and Andhra Pradesh. With this move, Nokia will now be the largest network supplier in regions generating over 50% of VIL’s revenue. The deployment is set to begin immediately, with Nokia playing a critical role in transforming VIL’s network infrastructure.
5G AirScale Portfolio and ReefShark Technology to Power VIL’s Network
The partnership will see Nokia deploying equipment from its comprehensive 5G AirScale portfolio, powered by ReefShark System-on-Chip technology. This will include the installation of base stations, baseband units, and Habrok Massive MIMO radios—the latest generation of MIMO technology designed for efficient deployment. The infrastructure upgrade will ensure that Vodafone Idea customers benefit from premium 5G capacity and coverage, enhancing their digital experience.
In addition to the 5G rollout, Nokia will also modernize Vodafone Idea’s existing 4G network with new multiband radios and baseband equipment. These upgrades will not only enhance 4G performance but also provide a smooth transition to 5G as the equipment is capable of supporting the new technology. This dual effort of upgrading both 4G and 5G infrastructure aligns with VIL’s vision of offering cutting-edge services to its customers.
As part of the deal, Vodafone Idea will leverage Nokia’s MantaRay SON (Self-Organizing Network) platform. This solution, known for its ability to boost network performance and efficiency, will automate various processes and optimize network configurations. The self-configuring modules within MantaRay SON are tailored to address unique operational challenges, ensuring VIL can deliver optimal service quality to its customers.
A Long-Term Partnership Built on Trust
This latest partnership is a continuation of a strong collaboration between the two companies. Nokia has been a key player in Vodafone Idea’s network evolution for over three decades, supporting its transition from 2G, 3G, 4G, and now 5G.
Akshaya Moondra, CEO of Vodafone Idea, expressed confidence in the collaboration, “We are committed to providing a best-in-class 4G and 5G experience to our customers, and this new deal with Nokia, who has been our partner since the beginning, will help us to deliver that. 5G will bring seamless high-speed connectivity and increased capacity supporting citizens and enterprises alike. This will also enable unprecedented levels of innovation and efficiency across various sectors, empowering organizations to thrive in today’s fast-paced digital landscape.”
Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia said, “Nokia is proud to be Vodafone Idea’s partner in the next stage of its network evolution. This is a continuation of our long-term partnership that has lasted for over three decades and highlights their trust in our technology portfolio. They will benefit from the very latest products and innovations from our industry-leading, energy-efficient AirScale portfolio that will bring premium quality capacity and connectivity to their customers. We look forward to working with Vodafone Idea on this exciting deployment.”
