Nokia has announced the successful deployment of its advanced AI-powered MantaRay SON (Self-Organizing Networks) solution in Vodafone Idea’s (Vi) 4G network, with plans to extend to its soon-to-be-launched 5G infrastructure across India. This deployment marks one of the largest SON implementations globally, optimizing over 1 million 4G and 5G cells to provide seamless, high-capacity, and energy-efficient connectivity for Vi’s customers.
MantaRay SON – Revolutionizing Network Optimization with AI
MantaRay SON represents a leap forward in network optimization. The platform leverages advanced machine learning algorithms to enhance network performance and operational efficiency autonomously. Unlike traditional manual methods, MantaRay SON continuously analyzes network traffic, detects anomalies, and optimizes resources in real time, eliminating the need for human intervention. On average, the system executes approximately 700,000 autonomous adjustments daily within Vi’s network.
As a virtualized platform, MantaRay SON integrates seamlessly with Vi’s existing infrastructure, offering flexibility and scalability in deployment. Its ability to dynamically adapt to traffic patterns not only improves user experience but also significantly reduces energy consumption through intelligent traffic management and resource optimization.
Driving Energy Efficiency and Sustainability
A standout feature of MantaRay SON is its capacity to reduce network energy consumption. By intelligently managing traffic and resources, the solution aligns with Vi’s efforts to enhance operational sustainability while maintaining superior connectivity standards. This capability also underscores the growing role of AI in driving energy-efficient telecom operations.
Strengthening Nokia-Vi Collaboration
This deployment further strengthens the long-standing partnership between Nokia and Vi, reinforcing their shared vision of an AI-driven transformation in the telecom sector. Earlier this year, Nokia entered into a three-year network modernization agreement with Vi, focused on upgrading 4G infrastructure and laying the groundwork for 5G expansion across India.
With MantaRay SON, Vi is poised to deliver unparalleled network performance while setting benchmarks for energy-efficient telecom operations. This collaboration represents a significant step toward meeting the evolving demands of Indian consumers and businesses in the digital era.
Jagbir Singh, CTO, Vodafone Idea said, “We are excited to introduce AI in our network, in collaboration with Nokia AI-driven MantaRay SON, leveraging the most advanced innovation in the decade. By harnessing AI, we are transforming our network operations to be more sustainable, agile, energy-efficient, and are delivering best in class service to our consumers. We are ready for the challenges of the digital future and its demand especially as we offer 5G services.”
Tarun Chhabra, Sr. Vice President & Country Head, Nokia (India) said, “This deal underscores Nokia’s industry leadership in delivering advanced SON solutions and positions Vi at the forefront of AI-driven telecom transformation in India. By using Nokia’s AI-powered MantaRay SON solution, Vi is equipped to set a new standard for network operation efficiency and customer experience in one of the world’s largest mobile markets.”
