Nokia and Samsung have announced an extension of their cross-license patent agreement

Nokia and Samsung have entered into a new agreement on 5G patent technology under which Samsung will be able to use Nokia’s fundamental inventions in 5G and other related technologies. The two companies had a similar agreement that expired at the end of 2022.

Under the new agreement, Samsung will be making royalty payments to Nokia over a multi-year period starting January 1, 2023. However, the specific terms of the agreement are not made public. It’s worth noting that Nokia currently holds a portfolio of over 20,000 patent families, with 4,500 of them considered essential to 5G technology. Additionally, the company has invested more than €130 billion in R&D since 2000.

Samsung is a leader in the smartphone industry, and we are delighted to have reached an amicable agreement with them. The agreement gives both companies the freedom to innovate and reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, decades-long investments in R&D and contributions to cellular standards and other technologies. – Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies
