Nokia has officially announced the signing of a patent cross-license agreement with OPPO, marking the end of a prolonged dispute over patent payments between the two companies. This comprehensive agreement encompasses fundamental inventions related to 5G and various other cellular technologies.
The terms and financial details of the agreement have been kept confidential, with Nokia stating that no specifics regarding the worth of the deal will be disclosed. This resolution comes as a significant development, aligning with Nokia’s recent efforts to establish multiple 5G patent agreements, including a notable deal with HONOR earlier this month.
OPPO, as of December 31, 2023, has made substantial strides in the deployment of 5G communication standard patents. The company boasts a global presence, with these patents covering over 40 countries and regions. Impressively, OPPO holds more than 5,900 patent families worldwide, with over 3,300 5G standard patents declared to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). Additionally, OPPO has submitted over 11,000 standard documents to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).
In recognition of OPPO’s prominence in the 5G landscape, the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) and a report from IPlytics, both in 2023, affirm OPPO’s position among the leading global companies in terms of 5G standard-essential patent strength.
The resolution of the patent dispute and the subsequent cross-license agreement reflect a commitment from both Nokia and OPPO to foster innovation and collaboration within the rapidly evolving 5G technology landscape. As the fifth major smartphone agreement that Nokia has concluded in the past 12 months, this development is indicative of the company’s proactive stance in establishing strategic partnerships in the dynamic realm of telecommunications.
