Nokia and Bharti Airtel have inked a transformative agreement to deploy a cutting-edge optical transport network. This strategic partnership is set to usher in a new era of superior services for Airtel’s customers, featuring additional capacity, heightened reliability, and lower operational costs.
As part of this groundbreaking collaboration, Airtel will leverage Nokia’s state-of-the-art 1830 PSS-x OTN switches within its National Long-Distance Network, seamlessly connecting major cities across the vast expanse of India. This move comes in response to the escalating demands on Communications Service Providers (CSPs) prompted by the advent of 5G networks and the nationwide push for ubiquitous broadband connectivity.
With the impending rollout of 5G technology and the increasing need for robust backhaul transport in the evolution of 5G mobile networks, Airtel is positioning itself at the forefront of this digital transformation. The deployment of Nokia’s advanced OTN solution is set to augment backhaul transport for denser 5G networks while catering to emerging segments such as smart grids, datacenter interconnect (DCI), and diverse business services.
To address the exponential surge in traffic demand, the transport networks must undergo a substantial upgrade to enhance overall capacity and bandwidth efficiency. Nokia’s high-capacity OTN switching, coupled with the utilization of additional spectrum, including the L-band wavelengths of the fiber, will play a pivotal role in meeting these evolving requirements.
The enhanced capacity resulting from this collaboration positions Bharti Airtel to deliver faster and more reliable broadband services, poised to meet the burgeoning needs of its customer base. Beyond the immediate benefits of increased capacity, the Nokia OTN solution enables Airtel to seamlessly modernize its legacy transport switching infrastructure across its pan-Indian network footprint.
