The United Kingdom’s regulatory authorities have granted their approval for Microsoft’s colossal $68.7 billion acquisition of gaming giant Activision Blizzard, following the Federal Trade Commission’s green light in July. This momentous development marks a significant shift in the gaming landscape as Microsoft solidifies its position as a global gaming powerhouse.
Microsoft Gaming’s CEO, Phil Spencer, an avid gamer himself, acknowledged the profound impact of Activision Blizzard and its subsidiary, King, on both the gaming industry and popular culture. Iconic titles like Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Candy Crush Saga have captured the imaginations of millions of players worldwide.
Ubisoft, a major player in the ever-evolving cloud gaming arena, now holds perpetual cloud streaming rights for pivotal franchises, including the beloved Call of Duty. Within the European Economic Area (EEA), encompassing EU countries, gamers can freely enjoy streaming these titles.
Outside the EEA, Ubisoft retains management of cloud streaming rights and holds the potential to license them to Microsoft for integration into Xbox Cloud Gaming. However, the prospect of withholding such licenses is minimal, with Microsoft agreeing to pay a wholesale fee for these rights.
As part of this monumental agreement, a range of popular Activision Blizzard games will soon become part of Ubisoft Plus, Ubisoft’s game subscription service. The specific timeline for full availability is yet to be disclosed, but this arrangement is set to span 15 years, with perpetual licenses securing Ubisoft’s authoritative control.
The gaming industry’s ongoing shift towards streaming is dramatically reshaping the accessibility of video games. With Ubisoft’s efforts, gaming is becoming as convenient to access as music and movie streaming services. In essence, Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, coupled with Ubisoft’s expanding role in cloud gaming, and the continuously evolving gaming landscape, promises a future of unprecedented convenience for gamers around the world.
