“Make in India” Initiative: Apple Declines Manufacturing iPads and MacBooks

Apple Declines Participation in IT Hardware PLI Scheme, Stays Focused on Manufacturing iPhones in India.

According to government sources, Apple has declined to participate in the IT hardware production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme’s revised version, stating its focus on manufacturing iPhones in India. As a result, Apple has currently decided against manufacturing iPads and MacBooks in the country.

However, the government remains optimistic that Apple may reconsider in the future. To accommodate such a possibility, the revised scheme is expected to have an extended tenure of eight years instead of the usual five or six years for other PLI schemes. Companies will have the flexibility to choose any six years to qualify for incentives after meeting the specified targets. The sources added that Apple could even join the PLI scheme two years later, given the flexibility provided by the revised version.
