PhonePe, a leading digital payments platform, has made a significant stride in India’s mobile app ecosystem with the consumer launch of its Indus Appstore. The unveiling took place at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, drawing attention from startup founders and tech industry leaders alike. The launch marks PhonePe’s endeavor to foster a more competitive and localized mobile app store economy in India, challenging the dominance of global giants like Google Play store.
Indus Appstore offers Indian consumers access to a diverse array of over 2 lakh mobile apps and games spanning 45 categories. Notably, users can discover these apps conveniently in 12 Indian languages, catering to 95% of Indians’ language preferences. To enhance user engagement, the app store introduces a novel short-video-based discovery feature, making app exploration more interactive and enjoyable.

Indus App Store over Google Playstore
A groundbreaking feature of the Indus Appstore is its provision for app and game developers to select any 3rd-party payment gateway for in-app billing without incurring any commission charges. This move, a global first, aims to empower developers with greater flexibility and control over their revenue streams.
Additionally, Indus Appstore plans to introduce its own in-app billing and catalog solutions in the future, although these will remain optional for developers. To incentivize developer registrations, Indus is waiving listing fees for one year, further facilitating the onboarding process.
Boost for Indian Startup Ecosystem
The launch of Indus Appstore comes at a pivotal moment, amidst growing calls from the Indian startup ecosystem for increased competition in the mobile app store landscape. With its commitment to fostering a more open and competitive environment, PhonePe’s Indus Appstore is poised to reshape India’s mobile app economy, offering developers and consumers alike a more diverse and inclusive platform for app discovery and distribution.
Sameer Nigam, CEO and Founder PhonePe added, “Indus Appstore challenges the status quo, ushering in an era of more healthy competition in the mobile app marketplace, which in turn should help create a more democratic and vibrant Indian digital ecosystem. Indus Appstore embodies our commitment to building a truly inclusive digital ecosystem where every Indian user feels at home.”
