India’s Commitment to Ethical AI for Safety and Trust

During the AI Safety Summit 2023 held in the UK, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India’s Minister of State for Electronics and IT, emphasized the critical need to govern Artificial Intelligence (AI) with principles centered on user safety, trust, and platform accountability. As India’s representative at this significant event, Minister Chandrasekhar extended invitations to nations worldwide for the forthcoming GPAI (Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence) and India AI summits set to take place in December 2023.

India, as the chair of GPAI, has taken a leadership position on AI, emphasizing the need for responsible AI development. Minister Chandrasekhar stated, “We have maintained that AI should be guided by principles of safety & trust for users, and accountability for platforms.”

During the summit, Minister Chandrasekhar participated in various discussions and sessions that delved into the future of AI and its global impact. He took part in the “Ministerial round table: Creating actions and next steps for future collaboration,” where he stressed the importance of building a shared understanding of the risks associated with Frontier AI and the need for international collaboration to address these challenges.

In another session titled “Sharing global opportunities for AI,” the minister highlighted the potential of AI and technology to enhance public services, aligning with India’s vision of utilizing AI to transform people’s lives while ensuring safety, trust, and accountability to mitigate harm to users. He also noted that there is a growing consensus among like-minded countries that AI should be harnessed for the greater good, progress, and prosperity of citizens worldwide.

During the summit, held on November 1, participating nations collectively agreed to “The Bletchley Declaration.” This document emphasizes the significance of aligning AI systems with human intentions and encourages a more profound exploration of the full potential of AI.

In addition to participating in discussions, Minister Chandrasekhar engaged in bilateral meetings with counterparts from the UK, Australia, the Netherlands, and Ireland. During his meeting with Viscount Camrose, the Minister of State for AI and Intellectual Property in the UK, they discussed the potential risks associated with user harm stemming from AI. Both leaders pledged to collaborate to make tangible progress in addressing these concerns in the AI sector in the months to come.

India’s proactive stance on AI safety, trust, and accountability reflects the country’s commitment to responsible AI development and its desire to foster global cooperation to ensure that AI benefits humanity while minimizing risks. As AI continues to play an increasingly significant role in various aspects of life, discussions and agreements such as “The Bletchley Declaration” mark important steps towards establishing ethical and safe AI standards on the global stage.
