India Soars 72 Places in Global Mobile Download Speeds Ranking with 5G Boost

In a remarkable technological leap, India has ascended a staggering 72 places in the global ranking of mobile download speeds, thanks to the introduction of 5G services. A recent report by Ookla, the creator of the renowned speed test, unveiled this significant milestone, marking a remarkable turnaround in India’s mobile internet landscape.

A Speed Revolution

The report indicates that India’s download speeds have surged by an impressive 3.59 times since the advent of 5G. The median download speeds, which stood at 13.87 Mbps in 2022, have catapulted to an impressive 50.21 Mbps in 2023. This meteoric rise has propelled India from its 119th position in September 2022 to a commendable 47th place in the Speedtest Global Index by August 2023.

Nationwide Progress

The impact of 5G has been felt across the length and breadth of the country. In October 2022, median mobile download speeds ranged from 10.37 Mbps in Northeast India to 21.49 Mbps in Jammu and Kashmir. By August 2023, substantial improvements were recorded nationwide, with all telecom circles boasting speeds exceeding 28 Mbps. Notably, Northeast India now boasts a median download speed of 28.02 Mbps, while Jammu and Kashmir lead the way with an impressive 150.95 Mbps.

Surpassing Global Giants

India’s newfound mobile download prowess has placed it ahead of several nations, including Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. It has even outpaced some Group of 20 (G20) countries, including Mexico (90th), Turkey (68th), the UK (62nd), Japan (58th), Brazil (50th), and South Africa (48th).

Overcoming 4G Limitations

Ookla’s report highlighted that Indian mobile users are among the world’s most data-intensive consumers. However, the country’s 4G networks struggled to meet expectations due to network congestion, poor cellular infrastructure, and spectrum constraints.

With the 5G spectrum auction, Indian operators have taken significant strides in addressing these challenge. The strategy involves offloading 4G traffic onto 5G networks, effectively reducing congestion on 4G networks. Early success is evident, with 25% to 35% of traffic already being redirected from 4G to 5G networks.
