HORIBA India Launches India’s First Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine Test Bed Facility

HORIBA India, a subsidiary of Kyoto-based HORIBA Ltd., a global leader in analytical and measurement solutions, has announced the inauguration of its first-ever Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) Test Bed Facility. Located at the HORIBA India Technical Center (HITC) in Chakan, Pune, this state-of-the-art facility marks a significant milestone in India’s journey toward carbon neutrality and sustainable energy solutions.

Expanding Horizons: A Commitment to Sustainability

This new facility represents HORIBA’s venture into the promising field of hydrogen technology, reinforcing its global vision of decarbonization and sustainability. The company has invested approximately INR 28-30 crores to establish the H2-ICE Test Bed Facility, which boasts an engine testing capacity of up to 380 kW—aligning with the requirements of India’s commercial vehicle segment.

Addressing the inauguration, Dr. George Gillespie, Executive Corporate Officer of HORIBA Energy and Environment, emphasized the pivotal role hydrogen can play in creating a cleaner planet: “HORIBA understands the dire need of a cleaner, greener planet. The establishment of this Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine Test Bed facility is going to be a significant step towards a sustainable tomorrow and plays a crucial role in India’s green energy revolution. A First for HORIBA Group Globally

The Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine Test Bed Facility in Pune is the first of its kind within the entire HORIBA Group worldwide. Dr. Rajeev Gautam, Corporate Officer of HORIBA Ltd. and President of HORIBA India, highlighted the importance of this milestone: “HORIBA’s investment in this state-of-the-art facility underscores our commitment to a sustainable future with Make-in-India products and solutions. The first-ever Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine Test Bed facility took a kick-start from India in the entire Global HORIBA group, and this pivotal step is a testament toward HORIBA’s goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 42% by 2033 hence, achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. State-of-the-Art Infrastructure and Experience Zone

HORIBA’s H2-ICE Test Bed Facility features cutting-edge infrastructure designed to meet global safety and compliance standards. Equipped to test engines ranging from 50 to 380 kW, the facility addresses the evolving demands of the Indian automotive market.

An immersive Experience Zone at the facility showcases advanced hydrogen-focused products such as the Hydrogen Gas Analyzer (HyEVO), Hydrogen Fuel Flow Meter (HyFQ-2000 Series), Laser Spectroscopic Motor Exhaust Gas Analyzer (MEXA-ONE-XL-NX), and Engine Dynamometer. Live demonstrations offer customers and partners hands-on exposure to these technologies, further cementing HORIBA’s commitment to innovation.

HORIBA India’s journey began in 2016, with its HITC in Chakan serving as a hub for automotive testing and advanced analytical instruments.
