Enhanced Uninstallation for Pre-installed Windows 11 Apps in Testing

Microsoft is taking steps to enhance user control over Windows 11 by allowing users to uninstall a wider range of built-in apps. Currently in testing with Canary Channel testers, the new Windows 11 build provides the ability to uninstall various pre-installed apps, including the Camera app, the recently discontinued Cortana app, Photos, People, and the Remote Desktop (MSTSC) client.

Traditionally, Microsoft has bundled numerous “inbox apps” with Windows installations. However, the company has been gradually enabling users to uninstall more of these apps, aiming to reduce unnecessary bloat. While these built-in apps aren’t typically large in size, this increased uninstallation flexibility should contribute to a more streamlined Windows experience.

Uninstallation options for the Camera app have been present in Windows 11 test builds since March, while the ability to uninstall Cortana was introduced earlier this month in test builds. Those not using Windows Insider builds will have to wait a bit longer before gaining the capability to uninstall Camera, Cortana, Photos, People, and Remote Desktop. Microsoft is planning a significant Windows 11 update for September, potentially introducing additional uninstallation choices.
