DigiCert and CI Plus LLP have jointly announced a significant milestone: issuing DigiCert CI Plus certificates to over one billion devices, and establishing robust PKI-based common trust standards across the expansive television industry ecosystem. CI Plus, an extension of the original Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) common standard, enhances protection for pay-TV content and facilitates direct delivery of secure services to TV sets in Europe without additional set-top boxes.

CI Plus LLP, a collaboration of TV and Common Interface module manufacturers facilitates encrypted broadcast television services and content delivery in Europe. The specifications of CI Plus for content decryption rely on PKI as the foundational technology, with partners conducting rigorous testing and audits to ensure trust in the growing number of registered device types, surpassing 620 and now exceeding one billion devices.
DigiCert, as the authoritative root of trust, issues provisioned certificates to the 50 licensees of CI Plus, guaranteeing device identity and certification, secure content delivery and protection, and prompt revocation of compromised hosts when necessary. Notably, the CI Plus specification was developed through industry collaboration among consumer electronics firms like Panasonic, Philips (now TP Vision), Samsung, and Sony, alongside pay-TV technology companies SmarDTV, Neotion, and SMiT, in partnership with TC TrustCenter, now under the stewardship of DigiCert. This collaboration represents an early example of industry cooperation in crafting PKI-based standards to establish a trusted foundation for future advancements.
