BorgWarner Expands Series-Production Battery Management System Program with Global OEM

BorgWarner has secured an expanded series-production award for its battery management system (BMS) with a global original equipment manufacturer (OEM), strengthening its position in the electrified vehicle ecosystem. BorgWarner has been supplying its BMS solution to the customer since 2023, and the newly expanded program will support additional B-segment and C-segment passenger vehicles, as well as light commercial vehicles for battery-electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) applications starting in 2029.

Modular BMS Architecture Designed for Performance and Durability

BorgWarner’s battery management system features a modular architecture comprising a central battery monitoring unit (BMU) connected to multiple cell monitoring units (CMUs) positioned at individual battery modules. Together, the system monitors state of charge, battery health, and temperature conditions while measuring cell voltages and performing passive cell balancing. This integrated functionality helps optimise battery performance and supports long-term durability across vehicle platforms.

Built for High-Voltage and Fast-Charging Applications

The BMS supports fast direct current (DC) charging communication and is engineered with integrated diagnostics and control functions to meet stringent safety expectations, including Automotive Safety Integrity Level D (ASIL D) functional safety targets. Its scalable architecture allows configuration across a wide range of BEV and PHEV battery pack designs, supporting applications operating at up to 800 volts.

The compact module-level design provides flexible packaging options for automakers, while the electronics platform is upgradeable to accommodate future enhancements and evolving vehicle requirements.

Supporting OEM Electrification Strategies at Scale

With decades of global automotive electronics expertise, BorgWarner’s expanded BMS program builds on a design that has already been validated in series production. The award underscores the company’s ability to deliver proven, scalable solutions that enable OEMs to accelerate electrified vehicle portfolios while leveraging established functionality and a reliable global supply footprint.

As automakers continue to expand EV and hybrid offerings across multiple vehicle segments, BorgWarner’s BMS technology plays a critical role in ensuring battery safety, efficiency, and performance in next-generation mobility platforms.

Leadership Quote

“We’re pleased to expand our series-production battery management program, highlighting our customer’s confidence in our production-proven design that’s already performing in real-world vehicle applications,” said Dr. Stefan Demmerle, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager, BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems. “As our customer adds new electrified vehicle lines, we’re upgrading compatibility to help them scale efficiently while maintaining the safety, durability and performance expectations that drivers rely on.”
