Apple has a reputation for waiting until new technologies mature before integrating them into their products, but reports suggest that the company’s CEO Tim Cook and head of operations Jeff Williams are eager to release their first AR/VR or MR (mixed reality) headset, the Reality Pro with rOS, as soon as possible. However, the design team reportedly objected to the launch, as they wanted to delay it to create a thinner, lighter, and more powerful product in the future. Despite this, the company is rumored to announce the headset at its upcoming developer event, WWDC 2023, with a later sale date.
Although a thinner and lighter Apple will launch an AR/VR headset this year, backed by CEO Tim Cook from Apple would have been desirable, it would have taken several years to develop, potentially causing the company to miss the opportunity to enter the market. Therefore, Apple may release the Reality Pro, which could be larger and more expensive than desired, with a price tag of around $3,000 (over Rs 2,00,000), making it one of the most expensive VR headsets for consumers this year. However, this will enable Apple to gain valuable insights into the market and user requirements, enabling the company to develop better products in the future.
According to reports, the Reality Pro headset from Apple is expected to feature cutting-edge technology such as dual 4K OLED screens and a dedicated processor, and it has the potential to become Tim Cook’s second major product release after the Apple Watch. However, Cook has already announced his intention to step down from his role as Apple’s CEO before the end of the decade, so the Reality Pro could be his final significant product release. With the release of the Reality Pro, Apple will have to compete with the Meta Quest series, which currently dominates the consumer VR market.
