Apple Introduces Revolutionary Update to Repair Procedures, Allowing Pre-Owned Parts in Repairs

Apple has announced a groundbreaking update to its repair procedures, granting customers and independent repair providers the ability to use pre-owned Apple parts in repairs. This significant move aims to prioritize user privacy, security, and safety while expanding repair options, prolonging product lifespan, and reducing environmental impact.

According to Apple, used genuine Apple parts will now offer full functionality and security equivalent to new genuine Apple parts. This achievement comes after extensive work over the past two years to enable the reuse of critical components such as biometric sensors for Face ID or Touch ID.

To streamline the repair process, Apple has implemented several improvements. Notably, customers and service providers will no longer need to provide a device’s serial number when ordering parts from the Self Service Repair Store for repairs not involving the replacement of the logic board. Additionally, future iPhone releases will support used biometric sensors, further enhancing repair capabilities.

In a bid to enhance security measures, Apple will extend its Activation Lock feature to iPhone parts to deter theft and ensure part authenticity. This feature prevents stolen iPhones from being disassembled for parts by restricting the calibration capabilities of supported parts obtained from devices with Activation Lock or Lost Mode enabled.

Apple is committed to transparency and access to repair history for device owners. Through Parts and Service history accessible within Settings on iOS, Apple ensures that second or third owners can view the complete repair and part history of their device. Furthermore, this fall, Apple will expand Parts and Service History to indicate whether a part is new or used genuine Apple.

Since its introduction in 2022, Self Service Repair has provided experienced individuals with manuals, genuine Apple parts, and tools used in official Apple locations. Currently supporting 40 Apple products across 33 countries and regions in 24 languages, Self Service Repair has seen substantial growth over the past five years.
