AMD to Invest $400 Million in Bengaluru, India, for New Campus Construction

Semiconductor giant AMD has unveiled plans for a substantial investment of approximately $400 million (equivalent to Rs. 3300 crore) in India over the next five years. The primary objective of this investment is to expand research, development, and engineering operations in the country.

As part of this initiative, AMD will construct a state-of-the-art campus in Bengaluru, Karnataka, which will become the company’s largest design center globally. The new campus, expected to be operational by the end of 2023, will feature advanced laboratories and collaborative tools, fostering an environment conducive to teamwork and innovation. This aligns with the Government of India’s policy initiatives to bolster the semiconductor industry in the country.

With the investment, AMD plans to create approximately 3,000 new engineering positions by the end of 2028, establishing the largest AMD design center in India. This strategic move will strengthen AMD’s presence across 10 locations in cities such as Bangalore, Delhi, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.

The significant announcement was made during the SemiconIndia 2023 conference, held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The conference, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aimed to attract investments to India’s semiconductor industry, positioning the country as a formidable manufacturing hub in competition with established players like Taiwan and China. Prominent chipmakers like Foxconn, Micron, and IBM were also in attendance, further emphasizing the importance of India’s growing role in the semiconductor domain.
