Bharti Airtel, a leading telecommunications service provider in India, has teamed up with IDEMIA Secure Transactions to introduce recycled PVC SIM cards, replacing virgin plastic cards. This move underscores Airtel’s commitment to promoting circular business practices and sustainability. IDEMIA Secure Transactions, a division of the IDEMIA Group, specializes in providing payment and connectivity solutions for financial institutions, mobile network operators, and automotive manufacturers.
Transition to Recycled Plastic SIM Cards
Airtel becomes the first telecommunications service provider in India to make the switch to recycled plastic SIM cards, marking an industry milestone.
By adopting recycled PVC SIM cards, Airtel aims to reduce the generation of over 165 tonnes of virgin plastic and curb the emission of more than 690 tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually.
The transition aligns with Airtel’s ongoing efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and promote circularity with its supplier partners and stakeholders. Airtel remains committed to encouraging waste reduction, recycling, and product reuse as part of its sustainability initiatives.
Pankaj Miglani, Director of Supply Chain at Bharti Airtel, expressed Airtel’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. He highlighted “We are delighted to announce yet another first as we continue to lead the Indian telecom industry. As a brand we endeavour to align our efforts to adopt various sustainable measures and contribute significantly towards India’s ambition to achieve net zero. Our collaboration with IDEMIA underscores our shared commitment to contributing to a sustainable future.”
Rahul Tandon, Senior VP of Connectivity Services, India, at IDEMIA Secure Transactions commented, “We are proud of our long-standing partnership with Airtel. We congratulate Airtel for taking the lead in reducing the carbon footprint and providing green solutions to their subscribers in India. I would also like to thank all our R&D teams for making such innovations possible.”
Airtel’s Sustainability Goals with recycled PVC SIM cards
Airtel has set ambitious targets to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions across its operations by 50.2% by FY 2030-31, with FY 2020-21 as the base year. Additionally, the company aims to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions by 42% over the same period. To achieve these goals, Airtel focuses on initiatives such as promoting energy efficiency, leveraging green energy sources, adopting renewable energy, and enhancing waste management practices.
Understanding CO2 Equivalent
Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2 equivalent) is a metric used to compare emissions from various greenhouse gases based on their global-warming potential. It represents the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide emitted by different gases, providing a standardized measure for assessing their environmental impact.
