Airtel, one of India’s leading telecom providers, has joined forces with MediaTek and Nokia to complete a groundbreaking trial that combines Time Division Duplex (TDD) and Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) mid-band spectrum to maximize uplink performance in 5G networks. Conducted at Airtel’s tech lab, this trial has achieved an unprecedented uplink speed of 300 Mbps, marking a significant advancement in 5G technology and network efficiency.
Innovative Spectrum Aggregation
The trial focused on aggregating frequency bands of 3.5 GHz (n78) and 2.1 GHz (n1) to enhance uplink (UL) performance. By dynamically switching uplink transmission across two carriers in the TDD and FDD spectrum, the trial introduced a new method of UL Tx switching. This innovation is designed to significantly boost uplink speeds, which are critical for data-intensive activities such as video conferencing, live streaming, and large file uploads.
Impact on 5G User Experience
The success of this trial underscores Airtel’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to deliver superior 5G user experiences. The enhanced uplink performance will provide users with faster data speeds and improved connectivity, particularly for high-demand applications that require robust network support.
Randeep Sekhon, Chief Technology Officer of Bharti Airtel, commented on the trial’s success: “At Airtel, continuous innovation remains the bedrock of all our product and service offerings. This trial not only stands testament to our philosophy of enhancing our state-of-the-art network infrastructure and delivering an unmatched 5G user experience but will also greatly enhance our network’s uplink performance, resulting in faster data speeds and improved connectivity.”
Collaborative Efforts and Industry Leadership
The trial was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Airtel, MediaTek, and Nokia. MediaTek’s Dimensity 5G mobile platform played a crucial role as the user equipment, enabling the high-speed uplink capabilities on Airtel’s 5G network.
Dr. Ho-Chi Hwang, General Manager of Wireless Communication Systems and Partnerships at MediaTek, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration: “We are thrilled to collaborate with Bharti Airtel and Nokia on this groundbreaking trial in India where our Dimensity 5G mobile platform played a crucial role in achieving the highest uplink speeds on Airtel’s 5G network. This partnership underscores our commitment to delivering cutting-edge technology that enhances the connectivity experience for users.”
Nokia provided the necessary equipment from its next-generation 5G AirScale radio portfolio, which facilitated the trial’s success. Tarun Chhabra, Country Manager and Head of Mobile Networks Business at Nokia, India, highlighted the significance of the trial: “We are proud to partner with our long-term partner Airtel on this ground-breaking project. Uplink Tx switching will pave the way for superior 5G networks, enabling seamless data transfer in mobile devices and driving demand for data-intensive applications like XR. We congratulate Bharti Airtel for achieving this milestone and pushing the boundaries of connectivity to new realms.”
This advanced trial represents a significant leap forward in 5G network technology, showcasing Airtel’s leadership in the telecom industry and its dedication to providing top-tier service to its customers. The collaboration between Airtel, MediaTek, and Nokia is a testament to the power of partnerships in driving innovation and setting new standards in connectivity. With the success of this trial, Airtel is well-positioned to continue leading the charge in delivering next-generation 5G experiences across India.
