The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a revival package for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) aimed at strengthening the telecom service provider and expanding its connectivity in remote areas of India. The package has a total outlay of Rs. 89,047 crore.
As part of the revival package, BSNL’s authorized capital will be increased from Rs. 1,50,000 crore to Rs. 2,10,000 crore. This increase in capital will provide BSNL with the necessary financial support to effectively carry out its operations and expansion plans.
Furthermore, the package includes the allocation of valuable wireless frequencies to BSNL. These frequencies will enable BSNL to enhance its network coverage and improve the quality of its telecom services nationwide. The spectrum allocations consist of:
- 700 MHz band spectrum valued at Rs. 46,338.6 crore: This band is known for its wide coverage and better indoor penetration capabilities.
- 70 MHz of frequencies in the 3300 MHz band valued at Rs. 26,184.2 crore: The 3300 MHz band falls within the mid-band spectrum range and is suitable for high-speed data services.
- Frequencies in the 26 GHz band valued at Rs. 6,564.93 crore: The 26 GHz band, operating in the millimeter-wave range, offers high capacity and low latency, making it well-suited for 5G services.
- Frequencies in the 2500 MHz band valued at Rs. 9,428.2 crore: The 2500 MHz band is another frequency range suitable for high-speed data services.
Additionally, the revival package sets aside Rs. 531.89 crore for miscellaneous items.
This comprehensive revival package demonstrates the government’s commitment to providing affordable and reliable telecom services to all citizens, with a particular focus on bridging the digital divide and ensuring connectivity in remote regions. The allocated spectrum will enable BSNL to enhance its network capabilities and deliver improved 4G and 5G services, especially in underserved areas.
