HTC unveiled a new accessory for the Vive called the Vive Tracker, which is noteworthy for being the first in its industry to use inside-out tracking technology, eliminating the need for external beacons. Users can attach the device to props to bring them into virtual reality or attach it to their body for improved body tracking.
HTC’s Vive Trackers are widely used by those interested in full-body VR tracking, but they rely on SteamVR Tracking technology, which requires external beacons. However, HTC has now revealed a new Vive Tracker that operates on inside-out tracking and doesn’t require external beacons or cameras to operate. Although it hasn’t been named yet, the device uses on-board cameras to track its own position in space, making it HTC’s first standalone tracker to operate on this technology.
According to HTC, the new standalone Vive Trackers can be used in groups of up to five, with two attached to the elbows, two to the feet, and one to the hips to enable comprehensive body tracking in VR. When combined with the headset and controllers, the trackers can accurately reflect the user’s movements, leading to some impressive VR experiences.
Although details are scarce at present, HTC has revealed that the trackers will support standalone Vive headsets, PC VR, and a self-contained mode for non-VR applications such as object tracking. While the price and battery life are yet to be announced, the device will be released in Q3 2023. Additionally, HTC states that the tracker is built on OpenXR, which will enable it to be used with other headsets from various vendors.
The new Vive Tracker also features a quick-release system at the base for effortless detachment from its mount. It also comes equipped with a standard camera tripod thread, allowing for compatibility with various standardized mounts and holders. Additionally, the trackers are compact in size, with HTC stating that they are only half the height of the latest Vive Tracker 3.0.
