Global mobility technology leader BorgWarner has announced that it has secured a significant contract to supply its state-of-the-art battery system for the HOLON Urban — a fully electric, Level 4 autonomous shuttle designed to transport up to 15 passengers. The collaboration marks BorgWarner’s first-ever supply of battery technology for autonomous vehicles produced in North America and also represents its first contract with HOLON, a company under the BENTELER Group.
Advanced Battery System Designed for the Future of Urban Mobility
The HOLON Urban shuttle will be powered by BorgWarner’s lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) 5AKM 157 cylindrical cell (CYC) battery system, featuring cutting-edge chemistry that delivers benchmark-setting energy density and superior performance. Each vehicle will house two battery packs, each with an integrated, replaceable contactor box and a multi-pack controller.
The 57 kWh battery packs are built with a modular design and incorporate a compact, active liquid cooling system within a robust stainless steel case to ensure durability and operational safety. This advanced thermal management system optimizes performance, enhances lifespan, and ensures consistent power delivery under various driving and environmental conditions.
Optimized for Safety, Performance, and Compliance
BorgWarner’s engineering expertise enabled the design of a custom battery pack perfectly tailored to the HOLON Urban’s space and performance specifications. The system is powered by BorgWarner’s proprietary software and a multi-pack controller, ensuring compliance with global cybersecurity and functional safety standards.
In alignment with U.S. government requirements, the battery system is Buy America compliant and satisfies the Foreign Entity of Concern (FEOC) restriction, making it eligible for domestic production incentives and partnerships. Manufacturing of the battery systems is scheduled to commence in Q2 2027 at BorgWarner’s facility in Seneca, South Carolina.
Powering the Next Generation of Autonomous Mobility
The partnership between BorgWarner and HOLON marks a pivotal step in advancing sustainable, intelligent urban transportation. With its latest-generation NMC battery technology, BorgWarner continues to drive innovation in electric and autonomous mobility solutions, reinforcing its position as a global leader in sustainable vehicle technologies.
“BorgWarner has extensive experience with smart and integrated battery management systems and excels in energy density, scalability and robust safety certifications – all key components to this exciting new application,” said Henk Vanthournout, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager, Battery and Charging Systems. “Working with an innovator like HOLON is a great fit for our team. They aim to provide safe, sustainable and inclusive transportation solutions, aligning with our overall sustainability strategy and vision to create a clean, energy-efficient world.”
Flavio Friesen, VP Engineering at HOLON, confirms: “BorgWarner is a strong fit for HOLON: their battery platform combines benchmark energy density with robust safety, cybersecurity, and serviceability. The modular, liquid-cooled two-pack system integrates perfectly with our shuttle’s packaging and uptime requirements, supporting not only our North American rollout, but also the demands in Europe and the Middle East regions.”
