In a groundbreaking move towards environmental sustainability, Huawei has collaborated with over 40 prominent tech companies and organizations to advocate for Green Digital Action (GDA) at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Climate Change agreement (COP28). The conference, hosted by the UAE, concluded on Tuesday.
As a founding member of this initiative, Huawei, in tandem with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), spearheads the action plan. Together, they have launched a peer-learning working group intending to fortify industry and international collaboration on environmental sustainability standards.
The comprehensive plan aims to “create a roadmap that will guide future work and call on experts to contribute post-COP28… and call to experts to share best practices that are not yet standardized,” as stated in the official document.
Scheduled to convene throughout 2024 until COP29, the working group is committed to expediting the implementation of identified standards, sharing best practices, and addressing existing gaps in environmental sustainability.
Huawei has taken the helm of the GDA pillar dedicated to green standards, reflecting a concerted effort to prioritize sustainability in digital practices.
In a significant development outlined in an outcome document released toward the end of COP28, the ITU emphasized that “driven by collaboration and consensus decisions, international standardization is a key avenue to make meaningful progress toward the future we want.”
Key outcomes from the conference include a joint statement by ITU, International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) stressing the importance of integrating sustainability into technical standards development.
Tomas Lamanauskas, ITU Deputy Secretary-General and convener of GDA, expressed optimism, stating, “The digital technology sector is giving us reason for hope with their clear commitments on climate action. “The ITU will work with our tech partners to ensure follow-through on these commitments with the aim of expanding and strengthening them in the future.”
The GDA initiative unfolded from December 2 to 9 at COP28, with Huawei actively participating in five separate events that accelerated action and showcased the tech industry’s commitments.
This nearly year-long effort involved over 40 partners, ranging from industry associations and UN agencies to governments and the private sector. The collaboration underscores a collective commitment to leveraging digital technology for climate action and fostering a sustainable future.
