PhonePe introduces Indus Appstore to rival Google’s Monopoly. PhonePe, an Indian player, has joined the league of other tech giants and launched the ‘Made in India’ Indus Appstore developer platform, aiming to challenge Google’s app store dominance. The Indus Appstore offers several incentives to app developers to attract Android users in India who traditionally rely on the Play Store.
Notably, there will be no fees for in-app purchases, a significant departure from the 30% fees imposed by the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. Additionally, developers can list their apps for free in the first year, with nominal charges afterward. The platform supports 12 Indian languages, offers an India-based support team, real-time analytics, and AI-powered monitoring. PhonePe aims to provide a credible alternative to the Google Play Store, emphasizing localization and improved app discovery and engagement.

Akash Dongre, CPO and Co-Founder of Indus Appstore, commented on the launch, highlighting the massive opportunity in India’s growing smartphone market, which is expected to exceed 1 billion users by 2026. Indus Appstore aims to offer developers a credible alternative to the Google Play Store, providing a more localized and engaging platform.
Developers can register on the Indus Appstore and list their apps via www.indusappstore.com. While PhonePe joins other players like Paytm, Samsung, and Xiaomi in the app store space, Google’s dominance remains formidable, raising questions about the potential success of PhonePe’s venture and whether users will adopt it for their app needs.
