Samsung’s highly anticipated wearable health-tracking device, rumored to be named the Galaxy Ring is currently in development and is said to be a collaboration between Samsung and both domestic and international component manufacturers. The goal is to ensure the device’s success before potentially moving forward with mass production, a decision that could be made as early as August.
What’s unique about Galaxy Ring?
Unlike Samsung’s existing Galaxy Watch, the smart ring aims to be an intelligent smart ring that can collect detailed body and health data through its built-in sensors. This data will then be conveniently displayed on a connected smartphone, offering users a more precise and accurate picture of their health metrics. To enhance accuracy further, the ring’s fit can be adjusted to match the user’s finger size, minimizing potential data inaccuracies caused by loose or overly tight fittings.
Challenges
However, there are some challenges that Samsung needs to address during the development process. Weak blood flow or improper fitting could potentially affect the accuracy of the collected data. Additionally, obtaining medical device certification is expected to be a lengthy process, taking around 10 to 12 months, which may delay the product’s availability even if mass production is approved.
Samsung is also exploring the possibility of integrating the “Galaxy Ring” with XR (mixed reality) devices, leveraging its XR technology to track users’ head and hand movements using cameras and sensors, as seen in patent applications. However, the launch of Samsung’s XR headset has reportedly been delayed by six months due to competition with Apple Vision Pro.
When will Galaxy Ring be launched?
The “Galaxy Ring” is projected to be released in 2024, potentially coinciding with the launch of the Galaxy S24 series. Interestingly, Noise and boAt have recently introduced their own health-focused smart rings in India, indicating a growing interest in wearable health-tracking technology.
