YouTube’s App Testing ‘Stable Volume’ Feature for Enhanced User Experience

YouTube is reportedly testing a new feature called “Stable Volume” on its app following the recent rollout of the 1080p Enhanced bitrate for YouTube Premium users on the web. While the platform has not officially disclosed the purpose of this feature, a Reddit user discovered and shared its existence, which appears under the Ambient mode option in the video settings page.

Although the exact functionality of the “Stable Volume” setting remains unclear, it is speculated that the feature aims to regulate and equalize volume levels across different videos. This could prevent sudden, drastic changes in volume or unexpected fluctuations while watching videos from various creators and channels.

YouTuber M. Brandon Lee suggests that the “Stable Volume” feature might work as a normalizer and compressor, evening out volume levels to minimize abrupt jumps between videos and even within a single video. However, there might be concerns about its impact on music content, as it could potentially affect videos with speech audio set at -12dB and intense background music at 0dB, such as slow-motion montages.

Currently, the availability of the “Stable Volume” feature is limited, indicating that it is likely in a testing phase or being gradually rolled out to YouTube users.
